British American Tobacco has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our team in Cairo, Egypt.
The candidate will need to have the following principal accountabilities.
1) Business Results:
Contribute towards the development and realization of integrated business strategies, plans, programs and projects which ensure sustained growth and profitability.
Draft, negotiate and conclude written letters, memoranda, agreements, press releases and/or other documents relating to all significant commercial transactions so as to optimize and protect the interests of the business and the wider BAT Group.
Assist with the registration and licensing of:
i) Trade marks and other intellectual property rights to the business and to co-ordinate any infringement or other protection action to maximize the value of BAT’s brands and know-how;
ii) Third party distribution agreements in each end-market.
Ensure that all marketing and promotional activities undertaken by the business are compliant with both the International Marketing Standards (IMS) and any other relevant laws and regulations in force from time to time to safeguard the BAT Group’s reputation as a responsible organization.
Monitor and maintain compliance with all corporate governance and legislative obligations that relate to BAT’s registered operations in Egypt.
Co-ordinate and support the defense of any product liability or other litigation that may arise in the market to eliminate potentially significant financial, reputational and partner relationship consequences.
Advise and assist the anti-illicit trade project manager to formulate and implement successful anti-illicit trade programmes and initiatives to increase the value and share of BAT’s brands and to act as the custodian of the business’ policies and procedures in respect of cross border trade in BAT products.

Support, implement and achieve the strategic plans and objectives of the Legal Department in accordance with legal imperative and other management initiatives.

Actively proffer ideas, proposals and initiatives for the continuous use of legal tools for competitive advantage and resolution of business challenges.

3) Management Results:
Assist the Legal team in ensuring all employees understand the legal requirements and standards of the Company and support their compliance with those requirements and standards.
Preparation of legal documentation eg contracts, leases etc to support business transactions and initiatives.
Contribute to cross functional projects and initiatives to assess, monitor and anticipate potential threats to the business such as competitors' activities, systems/structures failures etc. to support the achievement of business objectives.
Ensure that optimum legal protection is applied for when brand or marketing plans are developed and manage the process of securing registration by endeavouring to overcome oppositions by third parties and other objections raised to registration.
In conjunction with external lawyers ensure that robust case or defence is developed in response to litigation brought against the company or by the company against third parties.
4) Relationship Results:
Develop and optimize internal networks to ensure that the needs of the client are fully understood.
Build a network within the Legal community in order to enhance knowledge sharing about managing all current and upcoming business critical legislation challenges.
Effectively liaise and consult regularly with other functions within the area of responsibility and with the Senior Legal Counsel in order to maximise the effectiveness of legal as a function.
Liaise and consult regularly with peers in other organisations, officers of regulatory and enforcement agencies and entities such as GAFI, EFSA, GOEIC, Associations of Manufacturers, External lawyers, and colleagues in other countries as well as colleagues in centres of excellence such as BATMark, in order to optimise effectiveness of legal actions and foster advantageous relationships for use in advancing the company’s objectives.
5) Innovation Results
To identify and take steps in conjunction with management to minimise commercial risk.
Reduce complexity and develop clear and simple plans especially in situations where the business is threatened by the unethical practices of other players in the industry.
To keep abreast of developments in the law and to advise functions of the legal impact when appropriate.
