What are we talking about?
In a country that wishes to be a precursor and where tobacco is a subject of intense debate, the «
Public Affairs, legal and communication
» team has the huge and sometimes ungrateful responsibility to defend BAT’s image and interests alongside concerned parties by activating several levers such as lobbying, external communication and legal;
Within the team, the Communication manager oversees the passing of the company’s key messages to concerned parties, particularly during political debates, through media and social networks. His/her role is even more critical as direct access to political decision-makers is limited.
The job requires a strong coordination with the lobbying strategy and therefore an everyday work in tight connexion with the rest of the team; this is a job opening where everything must be created, with major challenges for an end market and a strong visibility for the employee, and having both a strategic and an operational dimension.
Drive the definition of external communication strategy
Determine the objectives of corporate communication in all its components: company reputation, image and company values, media relations, on-line communication and social media
Determine press/media/social media relation tactics, and articulate all tools around a yearly action plan to maximise impact
Lead and enliven the established set-up:
Design, submit for approval and set up the information circuit by cautiously choosing the most adequate tools: key messages, press-book, web site, twitter account, interviews, press meetings, press trips or lunches
Identify and express/rephrase the company’s key projects into a wording and an angle likely to be of interest to journalists and social media;
Actively exploit media monitoring to identify engagement opportunities
Manage journalist requests, act as a spokesperson, organise public stances for the company’s top team when necessary
Define and create (with the external agency and contractors) adequate information support per each target audiences: leaflets, infographic, long-read, photos, videos, tweets, etc.
Manage events (meetings, press briefing, trips)
Develop relations with target audiences
Create and develop close relationships with a portfolio of journalists and key influencers (press, radio, TV, web)
Manage and update the press contacts file (with the agency),
Actively animate the journalist and social media communities
Manage other tasks related to communication
Answer to HQ requests and the reporting aspects
Actively drive the external agency, select and manage external technical contractors to insure timely delivery of projects
Conditions / critères essentiels
Have a 4 to 7 years first-hand experience of media functioning coupled with demonstrated engagement skills allowing to keeping a strong network of journalists;
Master communication techniques and tools (oral, written, artwork, multimedia); Expertise in creating and selling in narratives, at turning complex issues into appealing/ interesting stories
At ease or attracted to social media
Strategic analysis capacity and ability to translate strategy into an operational action plan
organised, thorough, methodical
Master English language both written and oral
You know how to ponder, but you are also interested in action and you cannot abide speeches that are not followed by actions
You are not afraid of a challenge and you like to stand up for difficult causes: easiness bores you, complexity stimulates you
You can be « autonomous in executing » without being on « free wheel »: you understand the need to have actions and message content validated by your superiors, considering the sensitivity of subjects handled
You have a true team spirit because you believe success is more easily achieved together rather than alone, you are sociable and easy to get on with
You can make subjects progress by skilfully managing authority and volunteerism
