Scientist I, Toxicological Evaluations (Smokeless)
Job purpose and key deliverables
To direct and deliver legal and toxicological ingredient evaluations in accordance with guidelines from the Product Stewardship Council (PSC) in line with the R&D Policy Framework, Corporate Positions and specific legislation
Application of toxicology evaluations & regulatory assessments in a select number of key novel & innovative project areas
Prepare toxicological risk assessments from first principles for the assessment of new ingredients, materials, products or technologies. Approach to task is by selection of appropriate means learned from knowledge and training in the area of Product Knowledge, Applied Toxicology and Quantitative Risk Assessment.

Ability to address new problems from 1st principles.
Implements the principles of ‘Best Practice’ and ensures R&D and Product Technical teams are adhering to Product Stewardship processes
Ensures the confidentiality of all supplier information is maintained to ensure their trust, support and co-operation.
Planning – medium-long term workload.
Understands, promotes and applies their responsibilities under the EH&S policy.
Budget – inform forecast and adhere to financial process and controls.
Application of formal project management.
Provision of appropriate supervision & coaching to support others.
Initiator or key representative in interactions with R&D and Product innovation projects and suppliers .
Writes toxicological assessments, publications and presentations for communication with external colleagues
Authors and delivers GR&D reports and presentations when necessary
Participates in PSC meetings and Product Stewardship ingredient forums
Coaches and trains Senior Technologists in the above
Identify and suggest changes to operating and stakeholder management procedures for subsequent approval.
Contribute to the development of new working procedures/ methods by objective evidence and validation for Management/ Technical Review
Develops new working procedures by compiling objective evidence and validation for Management/Technical Review.
Relevant science background equivalent to 1st Degree
The role holder should hold a science degree, most likely in a biology or chemistry discipline
An MSc in Toxicology (or other relevant subject) would be an advantage
Active member of a relevant professional body or Technical Institution
e.g. Membership of the British Toxicological Society
Understanding of the principles of Toxicology and risk assessment
Demonstrated technical background in toxicological assessment of Tobacco, Nicotine Products, food products, cosmetics or other relevant industry sector of consumer goods.
Strong understanding of Product Stewardship/Consumer Safety processes
Demonstrated experience in quantitative toxicological risk assessment
Product knowledge gained from working in the Tobacco, Nicotine products, Food, Cosmetics, Consumer goods and/or Pharmaceutical Industry
Maintains awareness of innovation projects in at least 1 product category and timelines in order to prioritize and deliver work
Demonstrated ability to work well in team environment.
Stakeholder engagement and networking skills
Strong written, oral and presentation communication skills
Strong team player who collaborates with peers to support critical projects and deliverables
Pro-active engagement with Product Stewardship managers, particularly on projects risks and issues.
Positive ‘can do’ attitude and effective problem solver
Some regulatory experience gained from working in the Tobacco, Nicotine products Food, Cosmetics and/or Pharmaceutical Industry or relevant consumer goods.
Good awareness of technical developments in toxicology & regulations (tobacco & consumer goods)
Knowledge of BAT’s product development processes and how they link with Product Stewardship
Detailed knowledge of the product design features for at least 1 category of products in the BAT portfolio
Awareness of consumer trends and insights and how they influence and drive new product development
