British American Tobacco has a very exciting opportunity for a passionate individual to join our team in Luanda, Angola as Legal and External Affairs Manager.
The role holder will report to the General Manager of BAT Angola and will have responsibility for providing support to the BAT end market in Angola. The LEX Manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining effective regulation, reputation and communication management strategies in order to support the business’ vision of driving recognition as the responsible tobacco company and through this assist in driving regulatory engagement to improve long term business sustainability.
The role holder will assist in executing legal strategies to support the achievement of endmarket business objectives. As a member of the SAM LEX function will assist in the management of external legal counsel in the end market, to ensure proactive timely delivery of Legal services to the business’s operations, within the framework of the Functional strategy and objectives.
The LEX Manager acts as the Company Secretary for BAT Angola, and in this role ensures that the company complies with all the applicable regulations and corporate governance requirements. The role holder will have an understanding of risk management and be able to provide high quality legal advice to the Company.
The LEX Manager will assist in advising the business by interpreting the local legal environment, advising on regulatory and legislative compliance, and adherence to guidelines set by the group’s Legal function.
Government Affairs Responsibilities&Requirements
•Understand the international and end market tobacco regulatory environment.
•Map, classify, engage and lobby key stakeholders.
•Make written and oral submissions for and on behalf of the business.
◦Contribute to the formulation and execution of assigned activities in line with External Affairs strategy and guidelines to ensure External Affairs objectives are achieved;
•Maintain effective press monitoring system to ensure that management is kept well informed in timely fashion of all news of relevance to the company.
•Establish a working relationship with the media
•Develop and implement internal communications plans to support the business’ communication objectives.
•Established external communication plans to support the business’ operational and reputation objectives.
Legal Responsibilities & Requirements
•Provide legal opinions to the end markets as required from time to time.
•Interpret the legal and regulatory environment in which the businesses operate to ensure proper and timeous compliance with legislation and regulatory requirements in the end market.
•Manage litigation instituted by or against the business and ensure cost effective management of External Counsel.
•Draft and/or review commercial legal agreements
•Support commercial activities and corporate structural objectives of the business through provision of general legal services, legal support to the business in changes or proposed changes in corporate structures.
•Management of the trademark portfolio and trademark protection.
•Keep abreast of regulatory developments and understand illicit trade to support the team combating the problem through provision of legal advice.
•Contribute to raising the profile and visibility of the Legal Function through appropriate legal Communications.
•Preparing board packs and annual reports with respect to board meetings and general meetings and minuting at the respective meetings,
•Managing shareholder and investor relations
•Management of security and risk affairs of the business
•Custodian of the Business Continuity plans and testing for the business
•Assist with the development and implementation of consumer information and youth smoking prevention initiatives;
•Act as custodian of BAT´s global Corporate Design, defining locally implementation of global guidelines and ensuring that it is used actively, creatively and innovatively within the Company (e.g. on business documents, in print and electronic media, on external signage).
•Oversee and drive implementation and management of the Corporate Social Investment strategy ensuring full alignment with External Affairs strategy and company interests.
•Monitor and report on current & pending legislation impacting the business to enable well-informed decisions to be made.
•Ensure that the legal requirements of various projects and initiatives are understood and met.
•Support the maintaining of a sound control environment and risk management in the organisation.
•Act as champion for good corporate and adherence to standards of business conduct in the organisation.
•Contribute to build a culture of a winning organization;
•Develop and coach potential successors to ensure that there is a healthy leadership pipeline within the Department;
•Contribute to build high-performance working team.
•Pursue the legal leadership agenda of being a “Professional at the Heart of the Business” through understanding and contributing to resolving cross-functional requirements of the end-market.
